Guides for readers in the US
For developers and tech buyers in the US
What changes when you compare in the US
- Shelf prices leave out sales tax, which depends on the state, so compare the price you will actually pay.
- Phones are often sold through carriers, locked to the network until paid off; an unlocked phone works with any carrier.
- Calling apps work over mobile data, so calling family abroad needs data more than international minutes.
- Money sent abroad is covered by a federal rule: you see the exact amount received before paying, and can cancel within 30 minutes.
Compare anything for where you live
When you run a comparison, say where you are in the "Your specific context or requirements" box, for example "buying in the US, budget $800". The research is told what you wrote, so it can look for US prices and shops, and the verdict is written for your situation.
compare⁄io is free, has no affiliate links and takes no payment for placement; see our independence policy and how comparisons are researched. Guides for other countries are on the guides by country page.
