The three ways money goes from the UK to Bangladesh
| Way | How the family receives it | Typical speed | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A transfer app (Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit, Taptap Send, ACE Money Transfer and others) | A bank account, a bKash or other mobile wallet, or cash pickup, depending on the app | Minutes to a day | The exchange rate each one gives you, not only its fee |
| Your UK bank (an international payment) | A bank account only | One to five working days | The rate: Finder reports UK banks generally add 3% to 6% to the exchange rate |
| A money transfer counter or its app (Western Union, MoneyGram) | Cash pickup, a bank account or bKash | Often minutes | The cost can differ between paying online and paying cash at a counter |
Which apps deliver to which wallet changes. bKash publishes its own list of the companies that can send to a bKash account, by country; as of October 2026 it names Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit, Taptap Send, Western Union, MoneyGram and Ria among others. Check that the app offers bKash or Nagad for a sender in the UK before you set up the transfer.
What to compare before you send
- The taka that arrive. Put the same amount in pounds into each app and compare the final figure in taka. That one number includes the fee and the exchange rate markup together.
- How it is received. A wallet such as bKash puts the money on a phone in minutes, any day of the week. A bank deposit suits larger sums and family who bank. Cash pickup suits family with neither.
- The weekend. Banks in Bangladesh close on Friday and Saturday, and UK banks on Saturday and Sunday, so a bank transfer sent late in the week can wait days. Wallet transfers usually run around the clock.
- Limits. bKash says up to Tk 2,50,000 can be received in one transaction under Bangladesh Bank rules. Larger sums go to a bank account.
- Who holds your money. A UK provider should be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which you can check on the FCA register.
The 2.5% government incentive
Bangladesh adds a 2.5% cash incentive to money sent home through legal channels, paid to your family on arrival by the receiving bank or wallet; the government said in its June 2026 budget that it will continue. How it is paid, the limits on bKash and what taking the cash out costs are explained in receiving money from abroad in Bangladesh.
A bank account or bKash?
| Bank account | bKash or Nagad wallet | |
|---|---|---|
| Arrives | Hours to days; slower over weekends | Usually minutes, any day |
| Best for | Large amounts, savings, school or hospital fees | Monthly family support, emergencies |
| Limit per transfer | High | Tk 2,50,000 into bKash, as bKash reports |
| Taking cash out | At the bank or an ATM | At an agent, which charges a cash-out fee |
The cash-out fee is the cost people forget. If your family will take the money out as cash, check the wallet's current cash-out charge, or send to a bank account instead. For how bKash and Nagad differ inside Bangladesh, the money and banking comparisons below set them side by side.
How to find the best deal on the day
- Decide how your family will receive it: bank, wallet or cash.
- Open two or three apps that deliver that way and enter the same amount in pounds.
- Write down the taka each one says will arrive, and when.
- Pick the highest amount that arrives in time. First transfers often carry an offer, so check the rate on your second transfer too.
Questions people ask
Can I send money to bKash from the UK?
Yes. Several transfer apps let a sender in the UK pay into a bKash account. bKash publishes the list of companies that can send to it, by country; check that your app offers bKash for the UK before you start.
What is the cheapest way to send money to Bangladesh from the UK?
It changes from day to day, so no one app is always cheapest. Enter the same amount into two or three apps and compare the taka that arrive; that figure already includes the fee and the exchange rate.
Does my family get the 2.5% incentive if I use a transfer app?
The incentive is paid on remittances that arrive through legal, formal channels, which includes licensed transfer apps paying into a Bangladeshi bank or wallet. If the bonus does not appear, ask the receiving bank or wallet.
How long does a transfer take?
To a wallet, usually minutes. To a bank account, from the same day to several working days, and longer over a weekend, because banks in Bangladesh close on Friday and Saturday.
Is hundi safe?
No. It is illegal in Bangladesh, there is no protection if the money does not arrive, and it does not earn the 2.5% incentive.
