Start with why you want to leave
Write one sentence: what is wrong with what you have now? "Too expensive", "keeps crashing", "no support in my time zone". That sentence is the test every alternative has to pass first, and it stops you swapping one problem for a different one you did not think to check.
Finding the options
- For software and apps: an alternatives directory such as AlternativeTo lists what is like the tool you use, with licences and platforms. How it compares to compare⁄io.
- For products with specification sheets: a specification database. Where those stop.
- For services, local businesses and plans: search "[thing] alternative" and "[thing] vs", read which names keep coming up in forums, and ask people who have switched.
- Or compare what you have now against one option you know of, and ask the follow-up chat under the comparison what else people use instead.
Cutting the list
Apply your one-sentence test to every option and remove those that fail it. Then remove anything that fails a hard requirement — price ceiling, platform, country. Most lists of twenty become four here, without comparing anything in detail.
Comparing what is left
Put what you have now in the comparison too. An alternative only matters if it beats the thing you already have on what you care about — and sometimes, compared properly, the current one wins and you can stop looking. On compare⁄io, list your current option with the alternatives, describe the problem in the box beneath, and read the verdict, the table and the problems owners report for each. Then eliminate until one remains.
