Rogers vs Bell vs Telus: which Canadian carrier?

Canada's three big carriers are closer than their advertising suggests: in the latest Opensignal test Telus was named best network and Rogers won the most awards. Each also owns cheaper brands on the same network, which is where most people save.

These brands use their parent's network, so the signal is usually the same for less money, with fewer extras and, on some, slower speeds.

What to check for your own use

  • Coverage where you live, work and drive. Outside the big cities the networks differ much more than in them.
  • Calling Bangladesh. Calling apps work over data in Canada, so data matters more than long-distance minutes for most people.
  • Prices before tax. Advertised plan prices leave out sales tax, which varies by province.
  • Phone financing. A phone paid off over two years ties you to the carrier for that time; compare the total cost against buying the phone outright with a cheaper plan.
